Rasheed Wallace has agreed to join the Boston Celtics and will sign a two-year deal worth the mid-level exception, which is expected to be a little less than $6 million this year. The Celtics really pulled out all of the stops in recruiting Wallace, sending the Big Three of Kevin Garnett (a Sheed pal to begin with), Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. The Celtics will reportedly go over the luxury cap with the deal, but in order to get a player with Sheed's skill and experience is worth it.
The thought is that Sheed will come off the bench to spell Garnett or starting center Kendrick Perkins and that should be fine with the older Wallace whose signing has to be seen as nothing short of trying to get another championship ring. It's the same selfless move as Ron Artest's signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. It's all about that ring this offseason as seen by the aforementioned Sheed and Artest signings, but also the trade for Shaquille O'Neal by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the trade sending Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs, and to a lesser degree because there's no more Hedo Turkoglu, the Magic trading for Vince Carter.
However, how does this Sheed signing augment the Celtics chances to raise championship banner number 18? A lot. I'm not saying they're going to win the Eastern Conference hands down, but they have to be the favorite, even more so that the Cavs with Shaq. The Celtics are the ultimate "team" with a great leader in Garnett, a mix of veterans in Pierce, Allen, and now Wallace, and playoff experienced youngsters in Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, Leon Powe, and possibly Glen "Big Baby" Davis if the Celtics re-sign him.
The most important thing though is for the team to stay healthy, as witnessed last postseason when the absence of Garnett was felt during the playoffs. However, with Sheed, you have a lot better insurance policy for KG than Davis or Mikki Moore. Did the Celtics have it? That need for Sheed? No question.
