About BM

Barkley's Mouth is all about the NBA as we speak on what's going down in the Association today and what should be happening down the line.  It's all about the glory (and disgrace) of the NBA. Our style is down, dirty, honest, and entertaining, just like Charles Barkley himself. Thanks for peeping what we throw down!

QTBM Part IV: Can Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry Start In The Same Backcourt?

monta-ellis-says-no

Every weekday until the NBA season starts on October 27th, I will be asking a question that's bugging me (QTBM) about the upcoming campaign and attempt to answer my own query.  Comments are welcome.

Just a couple of years ago, you couldn't find a team that genuinely enjoyed playing with each other more than the Golden State Warriors.  Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, and Monta Ellis amongst others were the Bay Area's darlings... until the team was broken up.  Davis bolted for the Los Angeles Clippers, Richardson and Harrington were traded, Jackson wants to be traded now, and Ellis is saying that he and rookie guard Stephen Curry can't start in the same backcourt together.

Just what the once happy-go-lucky franchise needs - more dissension.

Going into the season there was a lot of excitement about the Ellis/Curry combination being an explosive duo.  Both are accomplished scorers, albeit for Curry it was only on the college level.  The pair own different approaches to putting the ball through the hoop as Ellis is more of a penetrator and finisher and Curry getting the majority of his points from the perimeter.  Theoretically, their games complement each other, but only in regards to scoring.  The main question is, who's going to facilitate the offense and pass the ball?

Essentially, both are shooting guards, but possess height (6'3") more ideal for playing the point guard position.  Ellis has overcome his lack of height to play the two in the NBA thanks in part to the Golden State run and gun offense, as well as the aforementioned Jackson able to bring the ball up.  And there's little doubt that Curry could do the same as Ellis, but offense aside, how would the defensive matchup to the opposing team's shooting guard work out?

When asked about teaming with Curry in the backcourt, Ellis answered in the following manner at the Warriors media day before the start of training camp:

Us together? No. Can’t. We just can’t. You’re not going to win that way. You can’t put two small guys out there and play the one and the two. You’ve got big two guards in the league.  You just can’t do it. Yes, you’re going to move up and down but eventually the game is going to slow down. You can’t do it.

Do you know who also agreed with that opinion?  Don Nelson, the head coach.  I agree as well, but to have the head coach agree with Ellis must not give Curry a lot of confidence and makes me wonder why the Warriors selected him in the first place.  Oh yeah, rumors of a trade with the Phoenix Suns for Amar'e Stoudemire.  But, that's come and gone and I just don't know if it's still going to happen unless Stoudemire agrees to signing an extension, which won't be happening since he can become a free agent after the season.

Regardless, what Ellis says makes sense.  Even if Curry can play the point guard position, which he played in his last season at Davidson, averaging 5.6 APG to go along with his 28.6 PPG, he would be better served to come off the bench, essentially, to relieve Ellis.  In that offensive system, they can play together at times, sure.  But in a league where most two-guards are about 6'6" and strong, having a 6'3" defender, especially one as relatively thin and weaker like Curry, "you can't do it."
